Photo-oxidative tuning of individual and coupled GaAs photonic crystal cavities
We demonstrate a new photo-induced oxidation technique for tuning GaAs
photonic crystal cavities using a pulsed laser with an
average power of . The laser oxidizes a small diameter spot, reducing the local index of refraction
and blueshifting the cavity. The tuning progress can be actively monitored in
real time. We also demonstrate tuning an individual cavity within a pair of
proximity-coupled cavities, showing that this method can be used to correct
undesired frequency shifts caused by fabrication imperfections in cavity
arrays.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Electrically Tunable Excitonic Light Emitting Diodes based on Monolayer WSe2 p-n Junctions
Light-emitting diodes are of importance for lighting, displays, optical
interconnects, logic and sensors. Hence the development of new systems that
allow improvements in their efficiency, spectral properties, compactness and
integrability could have significant ramifications. Monolayer transition metal
dichalcogenides have recently emerged as interesting candidates for
optoelectronic applications due to their unique optical properties.
Electroluminescence has already been observed from monolayer MoS2 devices.
However, the electroluminescence efficiency was low and the linewidth broad due
both to the poor optical quality of MoS2 and to ineffective contacts. Here, we
report electroluminescence from lateral p-n junctions in monolayer WSe2 induced
electrostatically using a thin boron nitride support as a dielectric layer with
multiple metal gates beneath. This structure allows effective injection of
electrons and holes, and combined with the high optical quality of WSe2 it
yields bright electroluminescence with 1000 times smaller injection current and
10 times smaller linewidth than in MoS2. Furthermore, by increasing the
injection bias we can tune the electroluminescence between regimes of
impurity-bound, charged, and neutral excitons. This system has the required
ingredients for new kinds of optoelectronic devices such as spin- and
valley-polarized light-emitting diodes, on-chip lasers, and two-dimensional
electro-optic modulators.Comment: 13 pages main text with 4 figures + 4 pages upplemental material
Monolithically multi-color lasing from an InGaN microdisk on a Si substrate
An optically pumped multi-color laser has been achieved using an InGaN/GaN based micro-disk with an undercut structure on a silicon substrate. The micro-disk laser has been fabricated by means of a combination of a cost-effective microsphere lithography technique and subsequent dry/wet etching processes. The microdisk laser is approximately 1 μm in diameter. The structure was designed in such a way that the vertical components of the whispering gallery (WG) modes formed can be effectively suppressed. Consequently, three clean lasing peaks at 442 nm, 493 nm and 522 nm have been achieved at room temperature by simply using a continuous-wave diode laser as an optical pumping source. Time–resolved micro photoluminescence (PL) measurements have been performed in order to further confirm the lasing by investigating the excitonic recombination dynamics of these lasing peaks. A three dimensional finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulation has been used for the structure design
Advances in small lasers
M.T.H was supported by an Australian Research council Future Fellowship research grant for this work. M.C.G. is grateful to the Scottish Funding Council (via SUPA) for financial support.Small lasers have dimensions or modes sizes close to or smaller than the wavelength of emitted light. In recent years there has been significant progress towards reducing the size and improving the characteristics of these devices. This work has been led primarily by the innovative use of new materials and cavity designs. This Review summarizes some of the latest developments, particularly in metallic and plasmonic lasers, improvements in small dielectric lasers, and the emerging area of small bio-compatible or bio-derived lasers. We examine the different approaches employed to reduce size and how they result in significant differences in the final device, particularly between metal- and dielectric-cavity lasers. We also present potential applications for the various forms of small lasers, and indicate where further developments are required.PostprintPeer reviewe
Room temperature continuous–wave green lasing from an InGaN microdisk on silicon
Optically pumped green lasing with an ultra low threshold has been achieved using an InGaN/GaN based micro-disk with an undercut structure on silicon substrates. The micro-disks with a diameter of around 1 μm were fabricated by means of a combination of a cost-effective silica micro-sphere approach, dry-etching and subsequent chemical etching. The combination of these techniques both minimises the roughness of the sidewalls of the micro-disks and also produces excellent circular geometry. Utilizing this fabrication process, lasing has been achieved at room temperature under optical pumping from a continuous-wave laser diode. The threshold for lasing is as low as 1 kW/cm2. Time–resolved micro photoluminescence (PL) and confocal PL measurements have been performed in order to further confirm the lasing action in whispering gallery modes and also investigate the excitonic recombination dynamics of the lasing
Levels of alpha-toxin correlate with distinct phenotypic response profiles of blood mononuclear cells and with agr background of community-associated Staphylococcus aureus isolates
Epidemiological studies of Staphylococcus aureus have shown a relation between certain clones and the presence of specific virulence genes, but how this translates into virulence-associated functional responses is not fully elucidated. Here we addressed this issue by analyses of community-acquired S. aureus strains characterized with respect to antibiotic resistance, ST types, agr types, and virulence gene profiles. Supernatants containing exotoxins were prepared from overnight bacterial cultures, and tested in proliferation assays using human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The strains displayed stable phenotypic response profiles, defined by either a proliferative or cytotoxic response. Although, virtually all strains elicited superantigen-mediated proliferative responses, the strains with a cytotoxic profile induced proliferation only in cultures with the most diluted supernatants. This indicated that the superantigen-response was masked by a cytotoxic effect which was also confirmed by flow cytometry analysis. The cytotoxic supernatants contained significantly higher levels of α-toxin than did the proliferative supernatants. Addition of α-toxin to supernatants characterized as proliferative switched the response into cytotoxic profiles. In contrast, no effect of Panton Valentine Leukocidin, δ-toxin or phenol soluble modulin α-3 was noted in the proliferative assay. Furthermore, a significant association between agr type and phenotypic profile was found, where agrII and agrIII strains had predominantly a proliferative profile whereas agrI and IV strains had a predominantly cytotoxic profile. The differential response profiles associated with specific S. aureus strains with varying toxin production could possibly have an impact on disease manifestations, and as such may reflect specific pathotypes
Nanoplasmonic filters for hollow core photonic crystal fibres
We demonstrate a method to add photonic functionalities to the tip of hollow photonic crystal bres, for ultra-compact and integrated lab-on-bre applications. Specifically we present an angularly robust passband lter that is directly applied to the facet of a bre, without adhesive or etching. The lter exploits the engineered plasmonic response of metallic features realised on a polymeric membrane and works over a range of 10 degrees, with a passband of 50 nm, centred at a wavelength of 800 nm. This result extends the available functionalities oered by the lab-on-bre methodology to photonic crystal bres, as well as providing a reversible method of functionalizing any type of bre.PostprintPeer reviewe
